What it is?

Cystic fibrosis is a disease that causes mucus in the body to become thick and sticky. This glue-like mucus builds up and cause problems in most of the body's organs, but mostly in the lungs and the pancreas.(Wedmd)

What causes it?
Cysitc fibrosis is a genetic disorder. A child must inherit the gene from both parents to obtain this disease.

Symptoms
-Blocked intestine at birth, which prevents the baby from passing his or her first stool.
-Very salty sweat or skin
-Continuous Diarrhea
-Not growing or gaining weight the way other chlderen should.
-Breathing problems and lung infections.

Other symtoms(That occur later in childhood)
-Clubbing(rounding and flattening) of the fingers.
-Rectal proplase (when part of the rectum protudes from the anus).
-Growths in the nose or sinuses

Age of death:
-1955 child who had this disease did not live to attend elementary school.
-10 years ago the death expectany with this disease was early 30s but now do to more research some patients have lived to see mid 40s.

Famous people with cysitc fibrosis?

  • Bill Williams: Born in 1960, he grew up to become a programmer in game designer. He is credited with the design and development of the well known atari games that include "Alley Cat", "Salmon Run". In 1998, the disease claimed his life.
  • Lisa Bentley: Canadian althlete born on November 28, 1968. In her life, she has competed in Ironman races and long distance triathlon. She was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at age 20. She is now 41!
  • Bob Flanagan: Born on December 27, 1952. He rose to become a nobel figure in poetry, music and performing arts. He has cystic fibrosis since an early age, which later took his life at age 43.
  • Alice Martineau: English pop singer and song writer. She was born on June 8, 1972. Born with cystic fibrosis, and lost her life on March 6, 2003.
  • Gregory Jean-Paul Lemarchal: Born on May 13, 1983. He also become one of the very famous french singers. He was diagnosed at 20 months old. He died of complications resulting from cystic fibrosis on April 30, 2007

As it shows in the diagram the parents have one of each gene. In this disease
you have to obtain one gene from each parent, which means the first three kids
got either one or the other or the complete opposite of the disease but for lucky
number four the kid has obtained two of the genes that would add up to be this disease.
